The forecast for this weekend is quite a bit cooler than the weather that we're currently experiencing. The low temperatures at night will be very close to freezing, and possibly below freezing. The temps during the day on Saturday will also be fairly cool, probably around 50 degrees. For those reasons, everyone attending the camp out will need to come prepared for the cold temps. Multiple thin layers work best since they can be removed as the temps go up. Warm sleeping bags, or a sleeping bag with a blanket, are going to be needed since we'll be in tents this weekend. We do not have a building to go to at night, so please come prepared for cold nights. As with any camp out, please make sure to bring an extra pair of shoes/boots as well as rain gear and other equipment to handle the unpredictable Iowa weather.
The sun will be going down Friday night at around 6:16, so it will be important to leave the church on time. Even leaving on time, it's going to be getting dark when we get to Mitigwa. Unlike our summer time camp outs, it's important for the boys to have a flashlight ready and available for when we get to Mitigwa. Please don't pack your flashlight in your bag because it will be difficult to get it out in time to set up camp. Cost: $15 - Grub-master & fuel to pull the trailer. Please make checks payable to Troop 188. Payment should be made before we leave on Friday evening. Depart: Friday, Oct, 26th - Cornerstone Baptist Church Loading begins at 5:15 PM so we can leave by 5:30 PM. Wear your Class “A” uniform. Return: Sunday, July 28th - East Elementary parking lot We'll return around 10:00. The boys will call before we leave so we can give a more accurate return time, so please make sure they know what phone number to call.

Please remember to bring a wilderness survival kit with you this weekend. There are no specific requirements for the contents of this kit, but you can find many suggestions on the internet. Just pack those things that you feel are needed in a survival kit.
While the forecast for this weekend is significantly better than we have seen for the last couple of weeks, there is (depending on the weather service you trust) a chance for rain on Saturday. Please come prepared to deal with any and all weather contingencies that we encounter in the middle of summer in Iowa. Cost: $15 - Grub-master & fuel to pull the trailer. Please make checks payable to Troop 188. Payment should be made before we leave on Friday evening. Depart: Friday, July, 27th - Cornerstone Baptist Church Loading begins at 5:15 PM so we can leave by 5:30 PM. Grinnell Scoutland is about an hour away, so we should be there in time to setup in the daylight. Wear your Class “A” uniform. Return: Sunday, July 29th - East Elementary parking lot (I believe that it is now open) We'll return around 10:00. The boys will call before we leave so we can give a more accurate return time, so please make sure they know what phone number to call. All Summer Camp fees must be paid in the next week or two. If you have any questions about how much your family owes please let me know. Every person, adult and Scout, must have a current BSA medical form turned in before we leave for camp. This form must be signed by your family physician. Sections A, B, and C must be completed and returned to me before camp. The form is good for one year, so if you turned in a form for Summer Camp last year then you must turn in an updated medical form. The BSA Medical form is below in case anyone needs a copy. We will be departing for camp on Sunday, June 24th from the Mercy North parking lot behind Quik Trip. We'll meet at 12:30 with the intention of leaving at 1:00. We are able to check into camp after 12:00 and we want to get there as early as possible so we can get our campsite setup and ready. We'll be loading the trailer with as much gear as possible since we'll have our trailer in our campsite, but given the size of our group this year we will need to have a large amount of gear hauled up in personal vehicles. Once at camp, we'll use one of the hay racks to haul our remaining gear back to camp. We'll be leaving camp on Saturday, June 30th. Unlike most of our other camp outs, you will not need to return to Ankeny with the group if you do not wish. Everyone is responsible for either picking up your son and his gear, or making arrangements for someone to bring him home. We will be hauling the trailer and gear back to Ankeny if you need your gear brought back to Ankeny. We've done this in years past since it simplifies the return trip home and allows the boys to go straight home if they want. We'll probably leave camp around 8:00 am, but additional information will follow once the full departure schedule is determined. If needed, your son can be signed out of camp early, but I'll need to have that information before camp. Anyone leaving camp early will need to notify me ahead of time and officially sign out in the camp office. I will have early departure forms with me at camp. Family night is Thursday, June 28th. This is the evening that families are invited to come up to camp for dinner and a couple of camp wide ceremonies. This year there will be dinner served in the dining hall, but as in years past we are suggesting that you bring your son's favorite food up for dinner on that evening. Pizza, fried chicken, and sub sandwiches are always common favorites. If you choose to take advantage of the dining hall option, the cost is $6 per person and you'll want to make those arrangements before going to camp. The Council office will be able to assist you with making those arrangements. The schedule for Thursday evening is: 5:00 - 6:30 pm - Dinner 6:45 - Flag ceremony 7:00 - Open areas 8:30 - Campfire The campfire is normally an entertainment type of event with songs and skits. After the campfire is the Order of the Arrow Call Out ceremony. This is one of the best ceremonies that you'll see in Scouting. This is where the older Scouts that have been nominated for entry into the Order of the Arrow are "Called Out", which basically means that they will begin their OA experience. It is a Native American Indian ceremony that is very exciting for the boys and very interesting for the families. I strongly encourage everyone to attend this activity. Please keep in mind that no vehicles are allowed in camp, so you will be walking everywhere you go. They boys are normally very excited to show you around, so please wear comfortable walking shoes and come prepared to walk around quite a bit. If you are interested, a photo order form for formal Summer Camp pictures is below. These pictures are taken on the first day of Camp while the boys are still wearing their Class A uniforms (and are still clean). If you are interested in pictures, then please fill out the form and bring it and a check when we leave for camp. We will collect photo forms and checks right before we leave for camp. I've received numerous questions about gear to being to camp. A word document with a suggested gear list for summer camp is below, so please take an opportunity to review this. As always, if there are any questions or concerns please feel free to let me know. There are a few things that I want to take an opportunity to cover in this message.
As with any type of long duration activity away from home, homesickness is always a risk. We always have some homesick boys while at camp, but there are a couple of things that you can do to help with this. Encourage your boys to enjoy their week at camp and to take full advantage of the opportunities that they will find there. Speak to them about the experience and remind him that you'll be seeing him on Thursday evening at family night. Cell phones are prohibited at camp for Scouts, and the office will not allow calls to be made by the boys, so please do not tell your son to call you during the week. The adults at camp will have their phones, but the boys will not be allowed to use them to call home except in the case of emergency. We've found that once a boy talks to his parents while homesick, it's unlikely that they'll finish their week at camp. If you have any questions or concerns about this policy please let me know. One of the best ways to help your son at camp is to send them a letter (yes, simple, old fashioned pen & paper letter). Letters will be collected at the office each day by myself or one of the other leaders and then distributed to the boys. It takes a couple of days for letters to make it there, so please feel free to send one before your son leaves for camp. It can be a huge deal for the boys to a simple letter or postcard at camp so please take advantage of this opportunity. The letters should be addressed as follows: Name of Scout Troop 188 Camp Mitigwa 1820 Magnolia Dr. Woodward IA 50276 If there are any questions or concerns please feel free to let me know. Summer camp is a big deal for the boys, and a new experience for many of you. We want to make this the best possible experience we can, so please let us know if you need anything. There are no stupid questions, so please feel free to ask about anything that you're unclear on. We currently have 38 boys signed up for Summer Camp, but I've spoken with a couple more families about camp but have not yet gotten merit badge choices or payment from those people. There is still time to sign up for Summer Camp, but we're getting close to the cutoff, so if you want to sign up, or believe that your son should be on this list, then please let me know ASAP. A document with the merit badges that each boy is registered for is below. If there are any concerns about merit badges then please let me know.
The troop's personal gear camp out checklist is below. Please use this document to help ensure that everyone brings everything they need to camp out. We discourage cots on normal camp outs since they tend to damage the floors of the Troop's tents. We do however recommend that the boys bring a ground pad in addition to their sleeping bag for comfort and warmth. Cost: $15 - Grub-master & fuel to pull the trailer. Please make checks payable to Troop 188. Payment should be made before we leave on Friday evening. Depart: Friday, June 1st - Cornerstone Baptist Church Loading begins at 5:15 PM so we can leave by 5:30 PM. Ledges State Park is only about 40 minutes away, so we should be there in time to setup in the daylight. Wear your Class “A” uniform. Return: Sunday, June 3rd - East Elementary parking lot We'll return around 10:00. The boys will call before we leave so we can give a more accurate return time, so please make sure they know what phone number to call. Things to Bring: Bring normal camp out clothes and equipment, including your Scout handbook. Please remember to leave all electronics at home. They are not needed and will only get lost or damaged if taken. If anyone has any questions or concerns please let me know.
Klondike Derby
When: January 20-22 Where: Camp Mitigwa The Hawk Eye District Klondike Derby is this weekend and it's looking like we're going to have great weather for it. There probably won't be much snow, but we'll make things work no matter what the conditions are. As is normal for our camp outs, we'll be meeting in the parking lot at Cornerstone Church at about 5:15 with the plan to leave for Mitigwa at 5:30. Please try to be on time so we can leave on time. Everyone needs to wear their class A uniform (including neckerchief) on Friday night and on Sunday when we return to Ankeny. We will be returning to the parking lot at East Elementary on Sunday morning at around 10:30. The boys will call home when we leave Mitigwa to give a better estimate on our return time. It's important to remember that this is a winter camp out even though the weather hasn't been typical for Iowa winters. There is a good chance that the boys may be wet an/or dirty on Saturday, so it's going to be very important to bring extra clothes, hats, gloves, and boots. This camp out is the first outing that we'll be trying our new grubmaster fee plan. Everyone attending needs to pay $15 to the Troop before we leave on Friday. This is $12 for food costs, and $3 for fuel for pulling the trailer. Grubmasters will need to bring receipts on Friday or to a Troop meeting in order to be reimbursed for the cost of the food. Winter Survival Training When: January 28 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Where: Iowa State University Armory The Mid-Iowa Council is conducting a Winter Survival Training. This is an excellent program that many of the members of the Troop have attended over the last few years, and I encourage anyone interested in attending to take advantage of this program. This is an indoor/outdoor program, everyone attending will need to come dressed for the weather. The attendance is limited to 300 participants. The fee for this event is $20.00 per Youth Member or Adult Leader. This fee includes a continental breakfast, lunch, coffee for adults, and patch. An “Army Survival Handbook” will be available for $15.00 each. additional information and registration Ski Trip When: February 17-19 Where: Sundown Ski resort in Dubuque, IA. The cost of equipment, lift tickets, and helmet for two days will be $69/day plus food and gas. Helmets are required by the BSA. More information is coming soon. Simpson College Road to Eagle Merit Badge Sessions When: January 14, February 4, and February 25 This event was scheduled on an individual basis, so you should already be aware if you're attending this event. Strategic Air Command(SAC) When: March 30-31 Where: SAC Museum in Omaha, IA We will be doing the space exploration merit badge. This is a Friday night event, so we'll be going over after school on Friday and will return on Saturday. There will be more information coming soon. We have our first winter camp of the year Dec. 2-4 at McHose Park in Boone. We're planning on working on some of the Geo-caching merit badge requirements on this camp out. In addition to the tent camping option, we have a cabin available for use by the Scouts and adults want a more comfortable camping option.
For those who want to camp in tents next weekend, you will need to have a sleeping bag capable of cold weather camping. This means that you will need to have a bag rated at 20 degrees or colder along with a ground pad capable of insulating you from the cold ground temperatures. For those who choose to sleep in the cabin, a cot is a good option for this camp out. The cabin has a concrete floor, so a cot would help make make it a much more comfortable night's sleep. As is usually the case on our local camp outs, we will plan to meet at Cornerstone at 5:30 on Friday evening with the intention to leave by 5:45. We will return to the parking lot at East Elementary around 10:00 on Sunday morning. The boys will call on Sunday morning to give a better idea of our return time, so please make sure they know what phone number to call. When: Oct. 14-16 Where: Camp Mitigwa What: This is our annual campout where we climb on the Mitigwa climbing tower all day. It looks like we're going to have great weather for our climbing tower camp out at Camp Mitigwa this weekend. I just wanted to pass along some last minute details so everyone can be ready to go. As normal, we'll meet in the parking lot at Cornerstone on Friday at 5:30 with the intention of leaving around 5:45. I know that there are a number of Scouts who will be coming late due to other commitments, which is fine, but I need to know who those people are before we leave Friday so we can keep an accurate count. We will return on Sunday morning around 10:30. Again, as normal, we'll return to the East Elementary parking log due to church services at Cornerstone. Please make sure that everyone comes prepared with the normal camp gear and clothing, especially warm clothing for the evenings since it will get fairly cool after the sun goes down. I also want to remind everyone to bring a water bottle so you can stay hydrated while climbing/repelling on the tower. Please remember, electronic devices are not allowed on camp outs, so please leave them home where they're safe. The file below is a copy of the Council climbing tower medical form. Everyone who is going to be on the tower this weekend needs to fill this form out and bring it Friday night. I will collect the forms at that time. I will have blank forms available, but please try to remember to bring your completed form so everything moves smoothly.
Our next camp out is scheduled for Sept 23-25. This camp out was originally planned to be the horse riding camp out, but due to some logistical challenges we are going to have to plan that outing for a later date. Unfortunately, the locations that we were looking at for that activity were not capable of handling a group as large as ours. We will continue to look into getting this setup and will let everyone know when we have more information.
The location for our next camp out is going to be Yellow Banks Park just south of Pleasant Hill. This location was chosen as the alternate location because it is so close to Ankeny. There is a BSA adult leader training on Sept 24th, so being close to Ankeny will allow our adult leaders the option of going on the camp out as well as attending the adult leader training session. Yellow Banks Park also has good hiking options available to us which will allow the Scouts the chance to complete the hiking requirements that they need for rank advancement. If you are interested in going on this event then please plan to sign up for it at Monday's Troop meeting on 9/12. We'll need to get this activity organized during the next two Troop meetings, so please plan to come prepared to sign up for the Yellow Banks camp out. Depart: Friday, Aug, 26th - Cornerstone Baptist Church
Loading begins at 5:15 PM so we can leave by 5:30 PM. It's a two hour drive to Marble Rock, so we need to leave on time. I suggest you eat before you go as we won’t be stopping to eat. If you bring something along to eat, make sure its ok to eat in the car you are riding in. Wear your Class “A” uniform. Return: Sunday, Aug 28th - East Elementary parking lot Things to Bring: Bring normal campout clothes and equipment, a towel & soap, and extra shoes. As always, please remember rain gear as we will be doing our activities regardless of the weather. |
